Abstract

Background: High-performance swimming requires specific physical attributes to optimize propulsion and minimize drag. While start, turn, and underwater phases are critical, comprehensive comparisons of physical characteristics between elite and sub-elite swimmers remain limited. This study aimed to investigate whether differences exist in physical characteristics related to performance between high-performance competitive swimmers (Olympic trial qualifiers) and average competitive swimmers.
Methods: Thirty-three male competitive swimmers were enrolled in this prospective observational study. Measured variables included vertical jump height, thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis angles in a streamlined position, ankle plantar flexion range of motion assessed by toe-floor distance, and shoulder joint extensor torque in an elevated position. The measurements were taken between March and April 2023. Participants were categorized into a High-performance group (N.=14) comprising athletes who competed in the Paris Olympic selection trials in March 2024, and a Normal group (N.=19) consisting of national age-group level swimmers who did not qualify.
Results: The High-performance group demonstrated significantly greater vertical jump height compared to the Normal group (61.9 vs. 55.1 cm). Additionally, the High-performance group exhibited significantly lower toe-floor distance values (7.3 vs. 8.9 cm), indicating superior ankle plantar flexion flexibility. No significant differences were found between groups regarding spinal alignment angles or shoulder extension strength.
Conclusions: Swimmers qualifying for Olympic trials possess significantly higher vertical jump height and greater ankle plantar flexion range of motion than non-qualifiers. These characteristics appear fundamental for optimizing starts, turns, and underwater undulatory swimming. Consequently, vertical jump height and ankle flexibility may be considered characteristics of elite competitive swimmers.
