浄土教経典の中国伝訳から『観無量寿経』が漢訳され、その影響が顕在的となる６世紀中葉までを中国初期浄土教とみなし、その間の僧伝資料や金石文から初期浄土教の実際を探った。中期浄土教との比較においては、因行（念仏）と果報（往生）との対応関係は認められず、むしろ万善万行とその迴向をもって実践がなされていたことを明らかにした。
