Summary
To explore issues of asymmetry and dominance between interlocutors an English language conversation between Japanese students was recorded. The transcript was subjected to conversation analysis to investigate 1) how one speaker dominated and lead the conversation in terms of quantitative participatory sequential and topical dominance; and 2) what conversational strategies the speakers employed. The educational implications of the results for language teaching were considered.
