批評の地位の確立者と位置づけられる小林秀雄の文章には哲学思想の裏打ちがあった。その主要な源泉はフランスではなくドイツ哲学にあった。初期から晩年に至るまでの彼の批評文は、「生の哲学」思潮を形成する著作群からの、ほぼ引用に近い〝借用〟のパッチワークの観を呈している。本書はその証左となる事例をあげながら、彼の「批評思想」形成の過程とその本来の意図を理解するための文脈を、解明・復元する試みである。
